6 Past and Present Student-Athletes Added As spexScholars in November

In November, current student-athlete Cheung Kemei (Fencing) and alumni Crystal Wong Jia Ying (Badminton), Fernel Tan Qian Ni (Shooting), Jessica Tan Wei Han (Badminton), Terry Hee Yong Kai (Badminton) and Veronica Shanti Pereira (Track and Field) joined the 2022 cohort of spexScholars. They comprise six out of the seven high-performing athletes who received the spexScholarship from Sport Singapore in November. The spexScholarship identifies, develops, and optimises the performance of athletes within the high-performance sport pathway, and supports their sporting aspirations. There are currently 77 spexScholars, out of which 37 are past and present student-athletes from Singapore Sports School.
Kemei, a fencer in IBDP Year 5, has had an excellent year. She won an individual bronze medal and a team gold medal at her debut Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi, clinched a team joint-bronze medal at the Asian Fencing Championships and was instrumental in the Women’s Foil team’s breakthrough performance at the Fencing World Cup. Kemei shared that the spexScholarship will support her goal of making the Olympics in 2024.
Sprinter Veronica Shanti Pereira shared with The Straits Times that she was extremely happy to receive the spexScholarship as it was one of the goals that she and her coach had set. Shanti has had a splendid year with record-breaking performances at the 31st SEA Games and the Commonwealth Games.
For mixed doubles Badminton duo Terry Hee and Jessica Tan, it has also been a breakthrough year. Terry shared with the media: “Our current goal will be 2024 Paris Olympics, and leading up to it, we will need to participate in many competitions in order to gain ranking points. This scholarship will enable us to participate in more competitions and perhaps overseas training to improve our level of play.”
