Developing All-Rounded Athletes
2019 Singapore Sports School Combined Events Invitational
They ran, they jumped, they hurdled, they threw. Over two days, 86 youth athletes in the Under 13 and Under 14 age categories competed to be the most all-rounded track and field athlete at the 1st Singapore Sports School Combined Events Invitational.
Four sports schools from Malaysia – Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Pahang (SSMP), Sekolah Sukan Malaysia Terengganu (SSMT) and Sekolah Sukan Tunku Mahkota Ismail (SSTMI) – were invited to 1 Champions Way to raise the competitive bar at the inaugural meet from 28 to 29 September 2019.
Athletes competed in four events: 80m Hurdles, 600m, Long Jump and Shot Put in the U13 age-group; and 100m Hurdles, 600m, High Jump and Shot Put in the U14.
BJSS dominated in the Boys and Girls Under 14 Team category, while SSMP claimed the top spots in the U13 age-group. Singapore Sports School student-athletes did well to finish top two teams in the Boys and Girls U13, and Boys U14 categories; and third in the Girls U14. It was a close fight between Singapore Sports School and SSMP for the Boys U13 team title, but the latter eventually secured the trophy 10 points ahead of the home team. Singapore Sports School’s U13 team’s performance was bolstered by Secondary 1’s Lucas Fun Le Cong who emerged champion in the category.
The two-day meet concluded with the Mixed Medley 4x100m Relay which saw Singapore Sports School’s quartet of Liao Fong Jun, Olivia Sallit, Samantha Theresa Ortega and Zach Chia Chin See combined good teamwork and speed to cross the line in first place.
The multi-events approach is adopted by the Track and Field Academy, in line with the Long-Term Athlete Development philosophy. Through participation in multi-events, youth athletes are provided a balanced development in fundamental skills that will benefit them in high-performance sport. Avoiding early specialisation also prevents injury arising from overuse of certain muscles.
Singapore Sports School U13 to U15 student-athletes will be heading up to BJSS for their annual International Combined Events competition from 2 to 3 November 2019.
