2022 has been a fantastic year for Singapore Sports School’s pencak silat exponents. After an excellent medal haul at the 31st Southeast Asian Games and World Championships, pencak silat exponents continued their fine form at the 6th Asian Pencak Silat Championships and Tertiary Silat Championships.

After winning titles at the SEA Games and World Championships, Amirah Sahrin (Extended Diploma in Sport Management), who is in the Artistic Women’s Team, and alumnus Muhammad Iqbal Abdul Rahman added another achievement and title under their belt for emerging as Asian Champions. Both of them competed at the 6th Asian Pencak Silat Championships and proved that they were formidable forces to defeat. Current student-athletes Muhammad Naufal Abdullah (Secondary 4) and Nadhrah Sahrin (Diploma in Business Year 1) claimed silver medals, while Siti Khadijah Mohamad Shahrem (Extended Diploma in Sport Management) and Nur Shaqira Sheik Alau’ddin (Secondary 3) did well to return with bronze medals.

Muhammad Naufal’s silver-medal win was a pleasant surprise and exceeded his coach’s expectations. The 16-year-old pencak silat exponent has set his mind on winning the Championship. He said, “It is my first overseas competition, and I am playing in the senior category despite my age. I physically prepared myself by training hard and always asking my coaches if they could help me polish my techniques in order for me to perform better in the competition,” shared Naufal.

Our pencak silat exponents contributed to Team Singapore’s second-place finish in the standings, behind overall champions Vietnam, at the 6th Asian Pencak Silat Championship held from 13 to 16 Oct 2022, at the Sher Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex in India.
