WOW-ed At First Sports School Experience

Sports School Orientation Camp 2022 (Part 1)

During the Primary School Leaving Examinations marking days on 17 to 19 October, our prospective student-athletes spent their four-day holiday in an interesting and meaningful way at Singapore Sports School. The 100 of them packed their bags, and arrived at 1 Champions Way for a three-day, two-night Sports School Orientation Camp. The Camp is the first of two parts to allow student-athletes to discover themselves, the School, and their batchmates through fun games and activities. The Camp also aims to better prepare them for their life in Sports School.

After two years of COVID-19 restrictions, the 2023 Secondary 1 batch were able to enjoy a physical stay-in camp, where they could interact face-to-face, and have an authentic Sports School experience.

Themed ‘Blazing The Trail’, a series of games and activities were being curated to help them learn more about their Academies and the School, as well as to foster strong camaraderie with their batchmates. The programme also helped the staff to get to know the new students under their care better.

The first day of the camp was kicked off by a welcome address by Principal Ong Kim Soon and Assistant Director of Boarding, Joshua Sing. After splitting into respective groups, they warmed up through ice-breaker games. In the afternoon, they had a taste of Academy training with their batchmates and seniors, and learned the School song and cheer before they called it a day. Just like any other student-athletes in the School, they also had an authentic experience to dine at The Arena, and stayed at boarding which is  unique to Sports School compared to most Secondary schools.

The action continued on the second day as student-athletes jumped into some dragon boating fun at Kallang. In the afternoon, they had an Amazing Race where they worked in teams to solve challenges together at various stations.

On the final day, they played more team bonding games before the Camp culminated in drumrolls and laughter when winning teams were announced at the end of the camp. Their parents also had an opportunity to learn about more the School as they joined their children on the final evening for dinner at The Arena, and listened to sharing by Sporting Parents Network member Mr Andrew Low and Principal Mr Ong Kim Soon.

The second part of the Orientation Camp will be held in the first week of the school term from 3 to 6 January 2023.
