Applied Learning For Sustainability

Applied Learning Programme

The Applied Learning Programme (ALP) was introduced for Secondary 1 student-athletes in 2024 to equip them with emerging 21st-century skills by focusing on the overarching theme of sustainability. It provides student-athletes with opportunities to internalise design thinking as a problem-solving approach to address real-world challenges centered on sustainability.

Through the programme, student-athletes develop global awareness and perspectives through multiple lenses while honing their character and leadership skills. In addition to fostering critical thinking and collaboration, the programme offers opportunities for personal reflection and growth, with an emphasis on resilience.

Student-athletes had the opportunity to showcase their projects to their peers and staff on 9 October 2024.

Track and Field, Secondary 1

This year, we had to apply our learning by creating advocacy posters and videos related to sustainability and learnt upcycling through music making, which culminated in a student showcase where we had to present our projects.

Creating a video was a journey that required many hours and a lot of hard work from my team, but we managed to produce something we were proud of by pushing through the editing and re-recording stages. My team and I saw this as a great opportunity to bond and make lasting memories. There were moments of disagreement, especially when the video did not meet our expectations. However, we talked things through, and in the end, the video turned out well. We had fun and we especially enjoyed the moments when we captured scenes that added more excitement to our project.

I learnt valuable editing and video-making skills that I can use in the future to create content for media platforms. I also discovered the importance of presenting confidently. During the showcase, I felt nervous when some teachers I did not know approached our station. However, after a few peers and teachers visited, I began to feel more comfortable and was able to present more smoothly and fluently.

Overall, it was an amazing experience, allowing me to gain not only new skills but also more knowledge about sustainability and practical ways to live sustainably.
