Young Faces At World Table Tennis

8 out of 9 past and present student-athletes formed the new young paddler line-up to represent Singapore at the World Table Tennis Star Contender 2021 held in Doha from 20 to 25 Septembe 2021. The Women’s team was made up of all Singapore Sports School past and present student-athletes - Goi Rui Xuan, Lin Ye, Wong Xin Ru, Zhang Wanling, and Zhou Jingyi, who is also the youngest player in the team. 

At 16 years old, Jingyi is ranked 850th, but she has showed potential as a youth player as she reached World No. 5 in the girls’ Under-15 rankings. The international tournament did not just provide her with the opportunity to test herself on the international stage, but had also inspired her to train and work harder to become better. “It is really an eye opener for me as it is my first time coming to such a big competition,” shared Jingyi in an interview with The Straits Times. 

Meanwhile, three Sports School past and present student-athletes – Beh Kun Ting, Clarence Chew and Koen Pang – formed the 5-person Men’s Team. 

Both the Men’s and Women’s Team are now moving their focus on the Asian Table Tennis Championships which is taking place at the same venue from 28 September to 5 October.

“I’m looking forward to competing at this event again and hope to have a similar mindset as how I performed at the Olympics and put on a good performance,” shared Clarence, the 2011, 2013 and 2015 Asian Championships veteran, in an interview with The Straits Times.
