Paddlers Excel In Local And International Competitions
Dr Ng Eng Hen-STTA Championships in Singapore, WTT Feeder in Panagyurishte, Bulgaria, WTT Youth Contender in Almaty and Darwin
It has been a busy month for our past and present student-athletes who participated in a series of back-to-back local and overseas competitions.
Locally at the Dr Ng Eng Hen-STTA Table Tennis Championships, both past and student- made podium finishes in all the 6 events that they participated in. At the competition held from 2 to 11 September 2022, Secondary 2 paddler Zhou Jinghe topped the U15 Boys’ Singles, while alumnae Cassandra Chew Jing Wen and Tay Hui Li were crowned champion in the U19 Girls’ Singles and Women's Singles respectively.
Jinghe’s elder sister, alumna Zhou Jingyi, also shone at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Youth Contender held in Almaty, Kazakhstan from 13 to 18 September. Against a strong pool of world-class competitors, Jingyi, together with partner Zeng Jian, scored a Women’s Doubles bronze medal. The duo defeated Swedish opponents in the quarterfinals with a convincing win of 3-0, but fell to Korean opponents to settle with a bronze medal in the semi-finals.
Jingyi and Zeng Jian had also won a Women’s Doubles silver medal earlier at the WTT Feeder held in Panagyurishte, Bulgaria from 30 August to 4 September.
At the WTT Youth Contender in Darwin, Australia, held from 27 to 29 September, Loy Xing Yao (Secondary 2) and Sie Lay Yin (Secondary 1) put up a strong fight against their opponents to win 2nd and 3rd place in the U15 Boys' and U13 Girls' Singles respectively.
