Azfar Luqman Ong
Valedictorian (Secondary), Class of 2023
Much like any child with a passion for swordplay, Azfar Luqman Ong was among those who enthusiastically brandished their "swords" while reenacting scenes from TV shows when he was young. His interest in fencing took root as he admired his brother's involvement in the sport. Then, the former St Joseph's Institution Junior student decided to join the school’s Fencing Co-Curricular Activity when he was in Primary 4. The following year, in Primary 5, he enrolled in the Learn-to-Fence Programme offered by Singapore Sports School.
Since then, his affection for the sport burgeoned. His Learn-to-Fence training experience with the Secondary student-athletes at Sports School solidified his determination to join the School in Secondary 1 as he witnessed the incredible support system it provided to his seniors.
His decision to join Sports School proved to be the best decision he has ever made as he lunged towards his dream to achieve greater heights in sports and studies.
Reflecting on his journey, Azfar, who was the Valedictorian representing the Secondary cohort said, "Despite facing challenges in balancing sports and studies, I knew my hard work had finally paid off when I won my first U20 gold medal at the 2023 Singapore Junior and Cadet Challenge. It was a really surreal experience, and it showed me that the only one stopping me from achieving my goals was myself."
He further added, "The School’s continuous belief in me by trusting me and supporting me to go overseas to represent both the country and school has really made me believe in myself more and helped me surpass my limits to do better and train harder than I even knew possible.”
Beyond his accolades, Azfar had also forged strong camaraderie with his seniors. He fondly recalled, "My most memorable experience I’ve ever had wouldn’t just be one, but the many late-night talks I had with my seniors in boarding. They always made sure that I was okay and helped motivate me after a hard day of training or in preparation for a major competition.”
Looking ahead, Azfar harbours aspirations of clinching medals at the upcoming Asian Junior and World Junior Championships. In the long term, he aims to become a full-time fencer by securing a spot in the senior team, and eventually representing Singapore in Major Games such as the SEA Games, Asian Games, and even the Olympics one day.
