Jian Tong, Simon Go Head-to-Head Once More

2021 Singapore Senior Tournament, Singapore Senior Championships

It was yet another 1-2 finish by Si To Jian Tong and Simon Lee Renjie in the Men’s Senior Epee event, this time at the 2021 Singapore Senior Tournament from 6 to 7 February 2021.

The clash between epeeists Jian Tong and Simon is becoming an all too familiar one. Since the restart of competitive sport action in December 2020, both post-secondary fencers from Singapore Sports School have gone head-to-head six times in as many competitions. In these encounters, four of which were in the gold medal-bout, Jian Tong has won thrice.

At the Singapore Senior Tournament, Jian Tong and Simon, both Diploma in Business Studies Year 2 student-athletes, beat four others to set up a meeting with each other in the Final. The match was a tight one, with Jian Tong just pipping Simon to the title with a score of 15-14.

That win helped 17-year-old Jian Tong sustain his undefeated streak in the Senior division over three tournaments going into the Singapore Senior Championships from 27 to 28 February. However, the tables were turned in the Championships when Jian Tong and Simon met once again in the Semi-Finals. A match score of 15-13 helped Simon secure a place in the Final against Sports School senior Jefferson Cheong Jia Hui, while Jian Tong settled for in joint-third place. Simon went on to claim victory after another tense 15-14 final.

“Winning three out of four Senior competitions so far shows that I’m a step closer to one of my short term goals which to medal at the 2021 Hanoi Southeast Asian Games and I’m motivated to continue working hard towards it,” said Jian Tong. “My coach Shim Jaesung has played a big part in my improvement as he guides me towards becoming a better fencer and person.”

Secondary 3 fencer Cheung Kemei also performed commendably, doing one better in the Senior Championships after winning a silver medal three weeks earlier at the Senior Tournament. She outfenced her older and more experienced competitors to win the Women’s Foil gold in the latest competition.
