With her eyes fixed on the finish line, Samantha Theresa Ortega dashed down the straight in the 27th MSSM-LAWA-SSSC U14 and U15 International Little Athletics Championship Girls Under 14 100m, crossing first in a hand-time of 12.5s to capture Singapore’s first gold medal of the meet on 10 June 2019. The 14-year-old from Singapore Sports School went on to win another 1 gold and 2 bronze medals in Pahang, Malaysia, on 10 and 11 July, which earned her the title of Best Performer in the Girls U14 category. Samantha’s second gold came from the 4x100m Relay which she anchored, giving Singapore more reason to cheer on Day 1 of the meet.
Bhavika Chandru also won the Best Performer award in her age-group having clinched a medal of each colour over the two days. The Sports School jumper bagged Singapore’s first gold of Day 2 after recording 11.35m in the Girls U15 Triple Jump. Her new Personal Best distance set her 34cm ahead of her closest competitor from Malaysia.
Netball Academy student-athlete Cheyenne Lim Hwee Suan was part of the 12-strong Team Sports School competing in the two-day Championship. The Secondary 2 student-athlete delivered a creditable run in the Girls U14 1,500m to finish third in 5:37.2s at her first international representation in track and field.
