Marathon Swimmers Perform At World Meet

2019 FINA/CNSG Marathon Swim World Series, Nantou Leg

Four Singapore Sports School present and past student-athletes made their first foray into waters off the shores of Southeast Asia on 7 September 2019 at the eighth leg of the 2019 FINA/CNSG Marathon Swim World Series. Post-secondary swimmers Luke Tan Yu Yang, Regine Goh Xuan Xuan, Ritchie Oh Rui Zhi and former student-athlete Chantal Liew Li-Shan competed against some of the world’s top open water swimmers at the Sun Moon Lake in Nantou, Chinese Taipei.

Chantal completed the 10km race as the second best Asian behind Hong Kong’s Nip Tsz Yin and an overall ranking of 9th out of 22 swimmers. Her time of 2:06.00.10s placed her 13:19.90s behind bronze medallist Rachele Bruni of Italy, the 2015 and 2016 FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup champion.

In the Men’s event, Ritchie and Luke, who are preparing for their Southeast Asian Games debut in the Philippines at the end of the year, clocked 2:06:24.80s (17th) and 2:06:33.30s (20th) respectively, about 10 minutes behind winner Nick Sloman of Australia. About three weeks prior, Ritchie had done well at the 2019 FINA Swimming World Cup, Singapore Leg, finishing 4th in the Men’s 1,500m Freestyle on 16 August.
