Esther Wins First Medal At Junior World Cup
FIE Junior World Cup, Singapore Junior Nationals 24/25
IBDP Year 6 student-athlete, Esther Tan, etched her name in the record books by clinching a bronze medal at the FIE Junior World Cup in Manama, Bahrain. She is the first current student-athlete to win a medal at the Junior World Cup.
In a fiercely competitive field, Esther went toe-to-toe with some of the world’s best young fencers, showcasing her skills, mental toughness and determination. Reflecting on her historic achievement, Esther shared, “It's an incredible honour to be the first to win a medal at such a big competition. I feel proud not just for myself but also for my coaches, parents and school, who have supported me every step of the way, pushing me to become a better fencer and giving me the opportunity to compete at higher-level competitions. This achievement feels almost unreal, and I’m extremely happy that all the hard work paid off, especially since balancing academics and sports has not been easy. It also motivates me to continue working hard and keep pushing myself to achieve even bigger things and medal in even bigger competitions.”
The road to success was not easy for Esther. She spent countless hours training, sticking to a well-structured routine that balanced her academic commitments with her sporting aspirations. Her dedication to both sports and studies has been the driving force behind her achievements.
Looking ahead, Esther is determined to continue her progress and aims to medal at the upcoming 2025 SEA Games, as well as the Asian and World Junior Championships. She also has her sights set on the Olympics, hoping to make her mark on the global stage.
Locally, at the Singapore Junior Nationals 24/25, the fencing team from Sports School continued to impress. They earned 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals. In the Junior Men’s Sabre event, Marcus Maximilian Tan and Josiah Tan Kai Liang dominated the competition, clinching the top two steps of the podium. On the other hand, Kayla Por Ke Xin, Gianna Koh Shao Yuan, and alumnus Sean Ho Jia Le earned themselves a bronze medal in the Junior Women’s Sabre, Junior Women’s Foil, and Junior Men’s Foil respectively.
