Valuable Learning Opportunity For Young Netballers
13th International Youth Netball Challenge 2024
From 23 to 29 November 2024, Singapore Sports School hosted the 13th edition of the International Youth Netball Challenge (IYNC) 2024. We welcomed ten Under-15 teams including teams from Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and South Africa. The competition also featured local teams such as the national Under-14 team, Tanglin Trust School and a team from the Netball Academy.
Paarl Gimnasium from South Africa dominated the finals against Bukit Jalil Sports School from Malaysia in the finals and won 46-16. Leifo Iziko (South Africa) and Singapore’s National Under-14 team took the 3rd and 4th spots, respectively, after a final score of 21-8.
Ong Shi Han, who won the Most Valuable Player award for Sports School shared her experience: “Personally, participating in the IYNC was an unforgettable experience that exceeded my expectations. This event brought together players from many countries during the week-long competition that was not only about netball, but also about personal growth, teamwork, and cultural exchange. For me and my team, it was a chance for us to bond, reach beyond our limits, and develop both as individuals and as a team.
Throughout the week, we faced a range of challenges on and off the court, which helped us build tenacity and trust, as well as a deeper understanding of each other. The competition itself was fierce, but we pushed through and managed to rise above our challenges. We supported each other through every match, celebrating our successes and learning from our mistakes, which allowed us to develop. The event also allowed us to connect with players from different backgrounds, gain new perspectives, and make lasting friendships.
Overall, the IYNC was an invaluable opportunity that fostered growth in every aspect of my life - whether as an athlete, a teammate or as a person. It’s an incredible opportunity to bond and create unforgettable memories as well. I’m grateful for the chance to have been a part of such a special event.”
The competition was also an excellent opportunity for our netballers to act as liaison officers for overseas teams and non-playing netballers to learn officiating skills. Alumni and current student-athletes in the polytechnic programme made time to conduct bench officiating lessons. Student-athletes learnt how to complete the complicated yet important team score sheets and take proper timekeeping. These skills learnt can lead them to officiate at events run by Netball Singapore in future.
