Crowning The Best At Awards Night 2025
Awards Night 2025
The annual, highly anticipated 21st Awards Night 2025 was a spectacular evening that celebrated the hard work, dedication, and remarkable achievements of past and present student-athletes. The event was a blend of glitz, glamour, and celebration, bringing together the Sports School community, including award recipients, past and present student-athletes and their loved ones, partners, and staff.
The Awards Night on 5 February 2025 was graced by Ms Teoh Zsin Woon, Chairman of Singapore Sports School’s Board of Directors and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth.
Emotions ran high as each award was presented. The pinnacle of the evening, the Moo Soon Chong Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year Award, named after the first principal of Sports School, was given to golfer Chen Xingtong and paddler Nicholas Tan in the secondary category, and wushu exponent Zeanne Law Zhi Ning and diver Max Lee Shen Oon in the post-secondary category.
Zeanne was the big winner of the night, receiving three awards in different categories, including the Outstanding Sports Achievement Award and MOE Edusave Character Award. This is her second consecutive year winning the Moo Soon Chong Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year (Post-Secondary). She shared, “Winning the World Championships in 2023 boosted my confidence as it was my first international win. That really motivated me to keep improving and pursuing this path. Thankfully, I managed to improve and defend a few titles in 2024, and now I am more assured of my abilities in Wushu. While there was pressure and more doubts in my head, I was able to manage it and perform in 2024.”
Cheung Kemei, who is the first double recipient of the Annabel Pennefather Excellence Award as she received it in both 2021 and 2024, was delighted that she was recognised for her hard work and achievements. She is a multiple medallist in two editions of the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games and represented Singapore at the 19th Asian Games and World Championships during her time as an extended International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) student-athlete. The other recipient, fencer Filzah Nor Anuar, also expressed that she was surprised to get the award, but was truly grateful for the recognition. The current Nanyang Technology University student, who still continues to train with her coach in Sports School, changed her playing style to fit her personality when she had time to reflect on herself while she was recovering from an injury.
The Annabel Pennfather Excellence Award honours sports icon Annabel Pennefather, a former national hockey player, former Vice-President of Singapore National Olympic Council, and former President of the Singapore Hockey Federation. The award is funded by the International Women’s Forum (IWF) Singapore Education Grant, which is managed by the Community Foundation of Singapore.
The Tan Howe Liang Excellence Award, given in recognition of Singapore’s first Olympic medallist, recognises two graduating male student-athletes for their sporting achievements. It was awarded to shuttler Johann Prajogo and fencer Bron Sheum Han Shen. Bron, who took a gap year to focus on training, continued to persevere despite a period of lacklustre performance. He eventually managed to qualify for the 2023 SEA Games. Bron was part of the all-Sports School Men’s Epee team that won bronze.
On the accolade, Bron said, “I was doubting myself whether it was worth the effort to take a gap year to pursue my passion, but I felt that it would be a waste to let my hard work go down the drain if I don’t continue to try again, so I chose not to give up. Receiving this award made me feel a sense of accomplishment and recognisition that people realise that I’ve been putting in a lot of effort.”
In addition, 21 past and present student-athletes were honoured with the Outstanding Sports Achievement Award for representing Singapore at the Olympic Games and achieving a medal at the World Championships. Among the outstanding sports talents who attended the ceremony were Olympians Loh Kean and Yeo Jia Min, and World Champion title holder Sheik Ferdous Sheik Alau’ddin from pencak silat.
Also, 14 student-athletes were handed the MOE Edusave Character Award and 10 received Outstanding Academic Awards for topping their cohort for national examinations and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.
