Total Defence Day

Total Defence Day, observed on 15 February, holds great significance for Singapore as it marks the day Singapore fell to the Japanese during World War II in 1942.

As part of the school’s National Education efforts, Singapore Sports School commemorated this day with a series of activities. These activities are aimed to emphasise the importance of readiness and resilience in overcoming challenges, ensuring that every Singaporean plays a role in strengthening the nation.

At Singapore Sports School, Total Defence was a key topic throughout the week from 17 to 20 February. On 17 February, Lieutenant Colonel Lim Jun Ha delivered a talk on the importance of Singapore being prepared for potential challenges, particularly those affecting essential services such as food, water, and electricity supplies.

On 18 and 20 February, the school participated in Exercise SG Ready 2025. The purpose of this simulation exercise was to align with the broader goal of Total Defence, ensuring that the school community is equipped to handle disruptions in essential services.

On 18 February, IBDP student-athletes experienced a food supply disruption and had to rely on ready-to-eat meals. These meals require no refrigeration, can be eaten at room temperature without reheating and have a shelf life of up to eight months. Student-athletes had the option to eat chicken bolognese pasta, curry chicken with biryani rice, fish porridge with sweet potato and pumpkin, sweet spicy tomato fish with basmati rice and vegetable marinara pasta.

On 20 February, both students and staff experienced a simulated power disruption. The morning felt notably warmer and more uncomfortable, as mentors conducted lessons on the importance of Total Defence, mostly outdoors as part of the Character and Citizenship Education curriculum.

By recognising the importance of Total Defence, our students are better equipped to actively contribute to strengthening our community and nation.
